We met Steve Karshner in the Spring of 2004, right after we moved to Tehachapi from the Santa Rosa area of Camarillo.
Our horse, Rock of Ages (Rocky to us), is a darling good-old-boy black and white Paint we got around 2001 for my husband (they even look alike). He came with shoes but unfortunately his hoof care had been terrible – his hoofs had overgrown his shoes by at least ten months and so had his body weight. He was only five years old at the time.

After our experience in Camarillo, we had obviously developed some trust issues. After all, this was our Rocky, and we couldn’t allow him to be hurt again.
But Steve was always patient, persistent, understanding and sensitive to all of our thoughts and concerns.
Now Rocky is a new good-old-boy and has been completely sound for four years, no longer tripping and doing great! We ride him everywhere. He thinks he is an endurance Arab now.
By the way, Rocky has white hoofs. Remember the old saying, white hoofs cannot go barefoot? Nonsense!

We lived in Camarillo and set out to find the best shoer. We had many to chose from, one of whom was "famous" and at vet at that. How could we go wrong? To the tune of $175 every six weeks we had Rocky shod correctly, we thought. Rocky was shod by the vet/shoer's assistant. Meanwhile Rocky's hoofs were getting worse. He began to trip and stumble, so the vet/shoer added all the additional bells and whistles (pads, etc.) to correct these problems and charged additionally. And still darling Rocky was not right. We would ride him but he wasn’t sure-footed. My little voice inside knew it wasn’t right but shouldn’t the "famous” vet/shoer know best? Wrong, dead wrong. He had caused more problems than we started with.
Fast forward to our move to Tehachapi ...
