The treatment we provide to navicular and foundered horses here at the Equine Rehabilitation Center is based on the discovery that the best way to return a horse to natural soundness is to remove the underlying cause of lameness and then, through the use of a tailored-made trimming, booting and exercise program, assist the foot to remodel itself and thus return to its natural, biomechanically functional and pain-free state.

Our primary goal is to create the right set of conditions that allow the foot to carry out the actual process of healing... and we find that this approach works very well and suprisingly fast.

Before After

Velvet came to us foundered, with severe rotation and deformity of the coffin bone as can be seen in the x-ray. The picture on the left is of her foot following the first trim.

Natural trimming was done regularly to rebalance the foot and eliminate the leverage action the elongated toe had in prying the new hoof wall away from the coffin bone. This gave Velvet's coffin bone the chance to reattach to the hoof wall as it grew out.
